Eligibility Test

US Universities generally do not accept 3 years’ Bachelors degree for admission to their masters programs. Sixteen years of formal education or a four years’ Bachelors degree or Masters Degree from your original country with good grades (high first class or above) are the essential requirements for admission to Master programs in most US Universities. Apart from TOEFL (IELTS and PTE is also being accepted by many universities) students are also required to clear competitive exams like GRE/GMAT to secure admission and financial aid in good US Universities and also to secure visa without hassle.

Cost Of Living

The costs of studying in USA depend on the institution and the level of study you choose. As an international student, your tuition fees are payable before you study and there can be additional cost for your courses including course materials and facilities.

Approximately annual expenses such as university or college fees, books, accommodation, transport etc. will vary from $20,000 to $50,000 depending upon the upon Institution and selected degree. However international students preferred to join government supported universities that provide quality education, where the tuition fees are nominal, and applicants have high prospects of getting financial aids like tuition fee waivers, research, teaching, graduate assistance.

Application And Visa Process

Citizen of a foreign country who wishes to study in USA must first obtain a visa, either a non immigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. There are two type of visa (F visa or M visa) students requires according to their study and the type of school.

A student visa (F or M) is required to study in the United States. Foreign students may not allowed to study after entering on a visitor (B) visa or through the Visa Waiver Program (VWP However  visitor (B) visa permits enrollment in a short recreational course of study, which is not for credit toward a degree or academic certificate.

Standard process for student visa application:

  • Student acceptance at Approved Educational Institute or SEVP ( Student and Exchange Visitor Program)
  • Pay SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee
  • Complete the US Student online visa application (Form DS-160 )
  • Pay the Visa Application Fees
  • Schedule and attend US student visa interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a student visa, or if another category is more suitable for your purpose of travel.  Student must satisfy the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.

Prepare documents for Interview:

  • Passport – Valid for at least six month
  • Nonimmigration Visa application, form DS-160 confirmation page
  • Application fee payment receipt
  • Photo same as in form DS-160
  • Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (F-1) Student Status-For Academic and Language Students, Form I-20 or Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant (M-1) Student Status for Vocational Students, Form I-20

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee, and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.

Career Prospects

Many International students want to work while they are studying in the United State to earn extra money. Here are most important rules for working in US on a student Visa:

  • You must maintain full-time student status at all time
  • You cannot work off campus during your first academic year of study however you are permitted to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week
  • After one academic year Int. students can work off campus in a position related to your field of study through the Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) options

Along with the world class degree, USA also offers the best in terms of future job prospects and immigration possibilities after the graduation. Students are entitled to stay back and work for one-year under OPT (Optional Professional Training). For STEM Graduates (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) the OPT can be further extended to another 24 months (Total 36 Months). Students who are successful in finding a suitable placement can apply for H1B (Job Visa) during this period and they can stay up to 6 years.
